Sue's Other Passions

If you are a writer, then you are an avid reader. However, our creativity doesn’t stop there. I love to quilt. Piecing quilt tops is just like solving a puzzle. When I’m on my HQ long arm machine, tension can mount as I finish quilting a project.

Gardening is equally exciting for me, and dangerous. After planting my annuals and dividing the perennials, I hold my breath to see if they will all live. Sounds like a scary murder mystery to me. Did I mention dangerous? I fractured my right tibia digging a 2 x 9 foot peony bed. The solid clay was almost deadly.

My cats are very dear to my heart. Royalty would be an accurate description of their way of life. I see other cat lovers scour the cat food selection at the pet and grocery stores for their felines’ favorite flavor. It takes less time to select a fresh head of lettuce for the humans.

My hours as a nurse were often erratic. This is why we never had a dog. I get my dog fix from my neighbors. Slinger, a rescue Greyhound, and Casey, a mixed Beagle, are all too happy to relieve me of the dog treats in my garage. The birds and squirrels are well fed too.

Currently, I belong to five organizations. Prairie Patch Quilt Guild is a great bunch of quilters. We are very active in community service. We make charity quilts for Maristella, a ministry organization which helps prevent homelessness through their programs and assistance. www.Marstella.org. We are also busy making quilts for Quilts of Valor, for our returning soldiers.

Another passion of mine is Lakeside Cemetery Association. I’m always impressed by the dedication of our small group in maintaining Lakeside. The cemetery is located in Libertyville, IL. I’ve been working on putting old grave records on a data base. Now I’m cross referencing them with the lot cards for accurate dates and spellings of names. Think about it, I know where all the bodies are buried!

My last three activities revolve around writing. I belong to the local chapters of Sisters In Crime, ,  and Mystery Writers of America, and I’m on the board for the Love Is Murder Conference. All three organizations support writers and provide wonderful educational programs, including the business of publishing and promotion.
